Both the Association of Counties and County Commissioners lauded Senator Crist for his strong commitment on behalf of local rule, his leadership to build an effective local court system throughout the state of Florida, and his effectiveness and outstanding support of public and mental health services in the community.
“The Florida Association of Counties is extremely honored to recognize Senator Victor Crist this year for his legislative efforts on behalf of counties,” stated John Wayne Smith, Legislative Director of the Florida Association of Counties. “Senator Crist worked tirelessly in the 2008 session on behalf of local rule.”
“Senator Crist championed mental health and substance abuse program legislation that maximized the use of state and local partnerships. From an efficiency standpoint, this was a great investment and an extremely efficient use of taxpayer dollars in a time where budgets are tight,” added Smith. As the lead on Justice in the Senate over the years the Senator has spearheaded passage of legislation to strengthen law enforcement and help reduce crime throughout the state of Florida, Smith said.
Hillsborough Commission Chairman Ken Hagan praised Senator Crist as a state legislator who cares about local rule. Commissioner Kevin White recognized Senator Crist for his grassroots, hands-on work in the streets of his community. Commissioners Mark Sharpe, Rose Ferlita and Al Higginbotham, noted Senator Crist for his open-door, open-ear, always accessible style of leadership. Commissioner Jim Norman acknowledged Senator Crist’s distinguished community service that began long before his election in 1992.
“I am honored to receive this recognition from the Florida Association of Counties and very appreciative of the Hillsborough County Commission in sharing in the presentation of this award. As a public official that has been engaged in local issues I understand the importance of local rule, and look forward to continuing to work with local governments across the state,” said Senator Crist.
In addition to serving as Chairman of the Criminal and Civil Justice Appropriations Committee, Senator Crist also actively serves on the Committees on Health Policy, where he is Vice Chairman, Commerce, Community Affairs, Criminal Justice, Fiscal Policy & Calendar, Rules, and Social Responsibility Policy & Calendar.
