ORLANDO – The Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association (FADAA) today honored State Sen. Victor Crist as a champion of substance abuse prevention and treatment by presenting him with the Association’s Legislative Leadership Award.

FADAA presented the award to Senator Crist at the Association’s Annual Conference which started Wednesday and runs through Friday.  The Conference is bringing together more than 400 officials from substance abuse prevention and treatment agencies, and related industries.

“Senator Crist this past legislative session played a key role in preserving millions of dollars for correctional substance abuse programs during a tight budget year,” FADAA Executive Mark Fontaine said.  “His tireless work on this issue will go a long way toward reducing the cycle of recidivism in our correctional system.”

Sen. Crist during the 2008 session fought back pressure to eliminate $31 million for treatment at correctional facilities and for community programs aimed at preventing probationers with drug-related offenses from re-offending and going back to prison.

FADAA also praised Senator Crist for his long-time commitment to substance abuse prevention and treatment issues, particularly among youths.

The Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association is a non-profit, membership organization that represents more than 100 community-based substance abuse treatment and prevention agencies.  FADAA’s mission is to represent its members in advancing addiction treatment, prevention and research through public policy.
