Tallahassee—Legislation filed by Senator Victor D. Crist (R-Tampa) seeks to protect consumers from unwanted solicitations to their cellular telephones.  Senate Bill 1318 grants Floridians the freedom to accept calls without the worry of being charged for unwanted calls from solicitors.

“Unfortunately, unlike with a home or business telephone, consumers who use cell phones may be charged for incoming calls.  Florida’s citizens should not be required to foot the bill for these unwanted solicitations,” said Senator Crist.

Cell phones are a very popular way to communicate and have been increasingly important to have in the event of an emergency.  These tiny devices allow you to be mobile and are a helpful way to save money on long distance charges.  The bill would prohibit solicitors from making unwanted calls to any telephone number assigned to a cellular telephone service without the subscriber’s prior written consent to the cellular telephone service.

“This is a consumer-friendly bill that values our time and hard-earned money.  It is not fair that Floridians must constantly screen their cell phone calls so that they are not burdened with a hefty phone bill at the end of the month,” concluded Senator Crist.
