Even during a tough economic time when our schools are feeling the bite of declining revenues, the persistent efforts of one Tampa lawmaker has given Hillsborough and Pasco County School Districts a reason to smile.  Before summer’s end, several schools throughout the Bay Area will receive a donation of computers, laptops, and monitors from the State of Florida.

The equipment was donated through a state program that allows school districts to receive excess computer inventory from the state if they apply and meet certain criteria. State Senator Victor Crist, a longtime community leader and social entrepreneur who immediately began contacting schools in Hillsborough and Pasco County this year to inform them of this opportunity and extend his helping hand, secured the equipment for several Bay Area schools who will soon be able to take advantage of this exciting—and much-needed—opportunity. The recipients include the Bowers-Whitley Career Center, Barbara Muller Elementary, Temple Terrace Elementary, Lewis Elementary School, as well as Greco Middle School and Terrace Community Middle School.

“In an increasingly technology-driven world, it is important that students have greater access to the endless opportunities that computer literacy and ‘hands-on’ technical skills provide”, said Senator Crist. “The donation of the computers will allow for that, as well as ease some of the financial burden placed on the school district by the constant need to replace or purchase new equipment.”

Mary Ellen Elia, superintendent of the Hillsborough County School District, was delighted to hear about the new computers. “Thanks to Senator Crist, schools will have additional computer resources to help our students. We appreciate his hard work and dedication to the students, and to the families of Hillsborough County.”
